Armoured Rhino Sculpture

Alex Sibanda’s armour-plated rhino sculpture includes scales, tortoise shells and watchful eyes that emphasise the need to safeguard rhinos from the international trade in rhino horns. Painter Nozipho Nsthalintshali has added intricate Zulu patterns, lovingly working over the surface of each textured scale, shell, feather and thorn. This piece reminds us of ancient warriors protecting themselves for the war ahead. Furthermore, the design of this armour exudes both futuristic and ancient associations.
